Stalexport Autostrady Capital Group presents its results for 2023

Press Releases 14 March 2024

The Stalexport Autostrady SA Capital Group recorded an increase in sales revenues to PLN 508.9 million in 2023 and ended the year with a net profit of PLN 116.2 million. These results are related primarily to the Group’s core business, i.e. management and operation of the A4 motorway on the Katowice-Kraków section.

In 2023, the Stalexport Autostrady SA Group also started a number of investments related to the preparation of the A4 Katowice-Kraków motorway for handing over to the public in 2027. The total value of the investment is estimated at over PLN 500 million.

In 2023, sales revenues in the Stalexport Autostrady Capital Group reached PLN 508.9 million, which is an increase of nearly 23% compared to 2022, while the net profit increased to approximately PLN 116.2 million. The EBIDTA result of the Capital Group amounted to PLN 211.6 million and was over 45.5% higher than in 2022.

Revenues and expenses of the Capital Group

Revenues from toll collection amounted to approximately PLN 503.5 million and increased by 23% compared to 2022. In 2023, the average daily traffic amounted to 48,150 vehicles and was 3% higher than the traffic recorded in 2022, while the traffic intensity of passenger cars increased by 3.7%, i.e. to 40,085 vehicles per day, and for trucks it decreased by approximately 0.6%, i.e. to 8,066 vehicles per day. The disproportion between the dynamics of traffic growth and the growth of revenues from toll collection is related to the changes in toll rates introduced on 4 July 2022 and 3 April 2023.

– The need to update toll rates is mainly related to the obligation of the concessionaire of the A4 Katowice-Kraków motorway - Stalexport Autostrada Małopolska S.A., a company belonging to the Capital Group - to hand over the motorway right-of-way to the State Treasury in very good technical condition after the concession expires in 2027 – explains Andrzej Kaczmarek, President of the Management Board of Stalexport Autostrady S.A. – This requires concentration of expenditure on investment and maintenance works, including replacement of the pavement of both motorway roads along the entire concession section, renovation of 22 bridge structures, and modernisation of the motorway drainage system, which will ensure the protection of surface waters – he adds.

Work related to the replacement of the pavement and renovation of bridge structures began in 2023 under a contract worth approximately PLN 423 million.

In 2023, the value of the Capital Group’s capital expenditures totalled approximately PLN 80.5 million (PLN 70 million in 2022), while maintenance costs, including replacement of the motorway pavement, last year amounted to a total of PLN 113.7 million. (PLN 38.4 million in 2022).

The results of the Stalexport Autostrady Capital Group were also significantly influenced by the increase in general and administrative costs by 89% compared to 2022, i.e. to the level of PLN 225.6 million. This category is dominated by payments to the State Treasury, which participates in the profits related to toll collection on the A4 Katowice-Kraków motorway. Payments to the State Treasury in 2023 amounted to over PLN 126.7 million compared to PLN 47.4 million in 2022.

The issuer’s standalone financial results and net profit

The standalone financial results of Stalexport Autostrady S.A. also improved by 16%. Sales revenues in 2023 amounted to approximately PLN 4.7 million (PLN 4 million in 2022). This revenue originates primarily from the lease of office and parking spaces in the office building in the centre of Katowice.

The Company’s net profit amounted to PLN 111.7 million and increased by 128% compared to 2022, mainly due to a significant increase in financial revenues (from PLN 56 million in 2022 to PLN 120.7 million in 2023), including received dividends. They amounted to over PLN 108 million in 2023 (PLN 48.3 million in 2022).

Sustainable development

The Stalexport Autostrady Capital Group, as part of the Mundys Group, implements many activities in the ESG area (environment, social responsibility, and corporate governance) as part of the mission that assumes stimulating the development of sustainable, safe, innovative and effective solutions that meet human needs in the field of mobility. The purpose of these activities is, among others, reducing CO2 emissions by:

  • increasing use of renewable energy sources,
  • application of innovative energy saving solutions,
  • replacement of the car fleet with low-emission vehicles
  • increasing the level of recycling in the Group’s companies.

In the area of environmental protection, SAM and VIA4 achieved very good results in optimising the use of electricity and CO2 reduction. Electricity consumption in 2023 decreased by approximately 30% compared to 2022, which also resulted in a reduction in CO2 emissions. Reducing electricity consumption is the result of, among others, replacing traditional motorway infrastructure lighting with LED lamps. For many years, Stalexport Autostrada Małopolska S.A. has also been implementing investments related to increasing the capacity of toll plazas on the A4 Katowice-Kraków motorway, which contribute to lower CO2 emissions by actually reducing road congestion at the above-mentioned toll plazas. Fast, automatic payment methods have been launched: A4Go electronic toll collection based on microwave technology and videotolling (license plate reading), which are currently used by nearly 45% of drivers on our section of the motorway. 100% of electricity purchased by the Group comes from ecological sources.

An element of the sustainable development of the Capital Group is concern for improving road traffic safety, which is manifested in initiating educational and social activities. In 2023, the A4 Katowice-Kraków concessionaire implemented the “Jazda bez czytanki” [Hold the Wheel and Not Your Phone] campaign, the aim of which was to make drivers aware of the dangers of using a smartphone while driving. The campaign received wide coverage in the media, and in December 2023 it was awarded the Srebrny Spinacz Award – a prestigious award of the Polish Public Relations Consultancies Association – in the “Automotive and Transport” category.
